Hiking around Najran
Najran is an oasis city with 500,000 inhabitants at an elevation of around 1,300 meters above sea level, where the gentle eastern foothills of the Sarawat Mountains meet the western edge of Rub al-Khali, the Empty Quarter. It is approximately 260 kilometers southeast of Abha, near the Yemeni border. The region was once a focal point of the spice trade, and today Najran is a developing tourist destination, particularly appealing to those with a passion for history. Visitors to Najran can explore a variety of stunning historical buildings, from the Amarah Palace to the hilltop castle of Raoum. Delve deeper into the region's history at the Najran Regional Museum and the Al-Okhdood Archaeological Site, where artifacts, drawings, and engravings from over 2,000 years ago are displayed. A highlight is the Hima Cultural Area, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcasing rock-art images dating back thousands of years.
Although Najran is just as safe as any city in Saudi Arabia, its proximity to the Yemeni border has led some countries to advise against travel there. We believe this precaution is well-intentioned but ultimately unnecessary, as Najran is a safe place to visit. However, it is advisable to stay informed with the latest updates and make your own decision based on up-to-date information.
