Tuwaiq Mountains - The Edge of the World

The plateau on which Riyadh sits comes to a very dramatic end in the west at a long vertical cliff overlooking a vast desert plain. One spot along this rim was dubbed the “Edge of the World”, then another place was named the “Second Edge of the World”, but the truth is, wherever you stand along this long escarpment, it feels the world ends there.

The hike featured here leads to the location known as the “Second Edge of the World”. However, instead of approaching it from the top, which requires a 4WD, we reach it from the bottom, suitable for an ordinary car. Once you are near the base of the mountain, there is a parking and camping area developed by the Saudi hiking organization called Darb, Two paths exist to the summit: the historic Manjour Trail and the recently created East Trail. You can ascend using one route and descend via the other.

The entire hike, including the ascent and descent, usually takes around 3 hours, so it is more than a half-day trip when factoring in driving time. Weekends, particularly Saturdays, are busy times when many vehicles converge at the top for the sunset.
