Raoum – Castle atop impressive boulders
Raoum is a small peak that sits alone in the broad valley less than 20 kilometers from Najran centre and 5 kilometers from the border with Yemen. As insignificant as Raoum may seem as a “mountain” at only 1557 m elevation, it offers great views, and Raoum Castle and the settings are also nice. Massive granite boulders form the summit mass, with the castle at the top. It sits in a strategic position overlooking the surrounding valleys and settlements; even the city of Najran can be seen in the distance. You can also get a close look at the mountains on the Yemeni side. This relatively recent structure was built by the Yemeni army during their invasion of the Najran area in 1929. The castle is fairly simple and features several thickwalled rooms over two stories, with wooden beams holding up roofs made of branches and mud. Just outside the castle are several cisterns built around the rock that were used to collect rain water back in the days.
The hike lasts about two hours. Saudi security personnel may monitor foreign visitors in this area so close to Yemen, but they are friendly and professional.
